Aldo Jose Peixoto MD, FASN, FASH
Associate Professor of Medicine (Nephrology); Associate Chief, VACHS Medical Service; Director, Renal Pathophysiology Module; Firm Chief, VA Inpatient Firm, Traditional Internal Medicine Program
Research Interests
Clinical and prognostic relevance of trans-telephonic home BP monitoring; arterial stiffness and kidney disease progression; systems factors related to the delivery of care in hypertension
Current Projects
Dr Peixoto is the Principal Investigator for the following active studies (updated Jan 2011):1. Home BP telemonitoring in hypertensive veterans. Cohort study of home telemonitored patients compared with matched controls to evaluate the impact of home telemedicine on the management of hypertension. The database is complete and analyses are in progress.
2. Pulse wave analysis and the kidney. Cross-sectional study evaluating radial artery pulse wave morphology and its relationship to pulse wave augmentation in the aorta, particularly at the level of the renal arteries (measured invasively during cardiac catheterization. The protocol started in Sep 2010 and is actively enrolling subjects.
3. Arterial compliance and CKD progression. Cohort study of CKD patients evaluating the prognostic relevance of brachial artery distensibility and systemic vascular compliance to long-term loss of renal function. The protocol commenced in 2003 and is in its final stages of analysis.
Research Summary
Clinical and prognostic relevance of trans-telephonic home BP monitoring: prediction of clinical events (mortality, cardio-renal endpoints), impact on processes of care in hypertension; Hypertension in chronic kidney disease: dialysate sodium prescription in hemodialysis, hemodynamic profiling in CKD and ESKD, ACE/ARB combination in diabetic nephropathy (VA Coop Study); Arterial stiffness and kidney disease progression: long term impact of arterial stiffness on mortality and loss of renal function in CKD; Evaluation of arterial mechanics and pulse wave morphology, and their relationships with renal function and disease.
