Physician Biography

Dr. Erica S. Spatz, MD, MHS is an Assistant Professor in the Section of Cardiovascular Medicine. She is also a Clinical Investigator in the Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE). Dr. Spatz' research focuses on advancing the quality and accessibility of cardiovascular disease management. She is particularly interested in the impact of health system organization and utilization on cardiovascular outcomes. She is also dedicated to improving patients’ experiences with the health care system, and in enhancing their involvement in medical decision-making. Dr. Spatz recently conducted a study evaluating the quality of outpatient care and its impact on mortality following acute myocardial infarction. She is currently working with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to develop a measure assessing the quality of ambulatory care for patients with heart failure.

Dr. Spatz received her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University, majoring in Human and Organizational Development. She completed medical school in Beer Sheva, Israel in a program emphasizing International Medicine; her senior thesis was conducted in Kenya, evaluating disease awareness and health system utilization in a large, rural community. Dr. Spatz completed her internal medicine training at Montefiore Medical Center, where she was chief resident and a teaching hospitalist. In 2008, she entered the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program at Yale University, following which she completed her cardiology fellowship at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Dr. Spatz is a co-founder of Project Access-New Haven, a non-profit organization that provides access to specialty care for underinsured patients.
