Biographical Info

Daniel L. Dries, M.D., M.P.H. is an attending cardiologist in the Yale Cardiology Division and is Medical Director of the Center for Advanced Heart Failure, Mechanical Circulatory Support and Cardiac Transplantation at the Yale New Haven Heart and Vascular Institute.

He specializes in the assessment and treatment of advanced heart failure including cardiac transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

He is board-certified in both Cardiovascular Medicine and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Dries earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Notre Dame. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center followed by a one-year fellowship in General Internal Medicine and Research Methodology at Johns Hopkins during which he earned a Masters in Public Health. He then embarked upon a 4-year cardiology fellowship as part of a joint program between Georgetown University Hospital and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, Bethesda Maryland, providing training in both clinical cardiology and clinical trial design and methodology. Training in advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation was completed at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Dries joins the Yale faculty from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania which ranks consistently in the top 5 nationally for overall volume of cardiac transplant procedures.

Dr. Dries is an NIH-funded investigator who has published more than 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts related to his research and the evaluation, prognosis, and treatment of advanced heart failure. His research goals include elucidating the genetic determinants of hypertension and the development of cardiac hypertrophy and failure. His basic laboratory efforts are also directed at the molecular biology of the natriuretic peptide system as an autocrine and paracrine cardiac and renal endocrine system regulating blood pressure and the cardiac response to increased blood pressure. His laboratory is also exploring the role of the unfolded protein response in the development and progression of heart failure.

Dr. Dries has presented his research and clinical experience at national and international conferences and symposia. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the American Heart Association, the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation and the Heart Failure Society of America.
