Getting Started with Readings

Perspectives on Medicine, Culture, and Society

The readings on this list lean heavily to medical history as one lens for examining interactions among medicine, culture, and society.  Each grouping represents a sample of worthwhile works, not an introductory (and certainly not a comprehensive) bibliography.  In future listings we hope to turn to perspectives drawn from ethics, anthropology, sociology, literature, the visual arts, and other fields in the humanities, social sciences, and the arts.

Hidden Treasure

Hidden Treasure

Despite more than a century and a half of classification and cataloguing, buried in the sheer mass of this collection are wondrous items largely unseen by the public and obscure even to librarians, curators, and historians. The individual objects—rare, extravagant, idiosyncratic, and sometimes surprising—brought to light in this book glow with beauty, grotesquery, wit and/or calamitous tragedy.
