The lecture is entitled: MILTON WINTERNITZ – LEGENDARY! DEAN OF YALE MEDICAL SCHOOL. In the 1920’s medicine was gradually incorporating science into the practice of medicine with enormous benefits for patients. At the time, enthusiasm for psychiatry and social medicine served as a counterweight to a total transformation of medical practice with atrophy of the art of medicine. Medical Dean Milton Winternitz and President James Angell of Yale conceived of the Institute for Human Relations as a place where the divinity and law schools and the social sciences could teach medical students and physicians about the whole patient, body and mind and spirit. Even though the prescient concept of the Institute failed, there are lessons for today as the hegemony of science grows even stronger… Dr. Spiro will discuss the life of Milton Winternitz and his lasting imprint upon the true character of the medical school.
