Psychiatry Resident Grand Rounds
Friday, August 5, 2011, 10:15-11:45AM
34 Park St
New Haven, CT 06519-1109
Allen Frances, the lead editor of DSM IV, has described psychiatric diagnosis thus: "You know those medieval maps? In the places where they didn’t know what was going on, they wrote 'Dragons live here.' We have a Dragon’s world here. But you wouldn’t want to be without that map."
Gary Greenberg, PhD, who has interviewed the major DSM players extensively, and whose latest book will describe the process and politics of the creation of DSM V, will discuss what the DSM revision is supposed to be accomplishing, the problems it is encountering, and the larger troubles afflicting psychiatric nosology and diagnosis.
Dr. Greenberg is a private practice therapist in New London. He is also a freelance journalist. His essays and features have appeared in Harper's, The New Yorker, The Nation, and Rolling Stone, among other magazines. He is the author of three books, most recently Manufacturing Depression: The Secret History of a Modern Disease.
