Electives at Yale School of Medicine

Two electives have been organized at the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) for 2007-2008.

Social, Political and Economic Determinants of Global Health

This new elective will serve as an interdisciplinary introduction to Global Health. The course will meet on alternate Mondays throughout the 2007-2008 academic year and will introduce students to key concepts in global health through speakers from Yale and other institutions. Class sessions will be held 5:30-7:30 in the Anlyan Center .

For more information, contact Course Director Dr. Michele Barry (michele.barry@yale.edu), or student facilitators Ryan Schwarz (ryan.schwarz@yale.edu) and Elizabeth Wahl (elizabeth.wahl@ yale.edu).

Introduction to Research Methods in Global Health

This new workshop will prepare Yale Medical, Public Health, Nursing and Physician Assistant students interested in pursuing Global Health research. The focus will be on field-based biomedical research in low-resource countries. Most workshop participants will likely apply for the Downs Fellowship or another source of funding. The workshop is composed of two main components:

  1. Lectures (Fall semester)
  2. Peer review of student proposals (Spring semester).

Only students who have satisfactorily completed the Fall component of the workshop and have demonstrated commitment and progress in developing their proposal to conduct a Global Health research project in the Summer of 2008 will be permitted to participate in the Spring session.
