Many YSM students take a “fifth year,” typically between the third and fourth years of the curriculum. During this year, students complete clinical electives, research, or service work domestically and abroad, and/or enroll in alternative degree programs (e.g. MPH, MBA, etc). The fifth year is often funded through fellowships.
The Yale-China Association, through the efforts of Nancy Chapman and Wangsheng Li, funds two medical students annually in Changsha,China. The students spend a year teaching medical English to Chinese medical students at Xiangya School of Medicine. The Yale-China Association founded the Xiangya (a contraction of the words Hunan and Yale) Hospital in Changsha and has a long tradition of supporting exchanges between students at Yale and students in China. This program provides students with intensive language and cultural education. In addition to teaching medical English, Yale students may do a clinical elective or develop/participate in a research project in China.
More information and application materials can be obtained at Yale-China Medical English Fellowship Program.
This program supports an individual interested in comparing bioethical issues in the US and England. Interested students would take the Comparative Health Policy and Ethics seminar and a directed reading course at the Bioethics Center in the Fall Semester. In the Spring Semester students would travel to Keele Medical School in England for three months. In order to fully understand the differences in the US and English system of care, students will participate in a clinical elective at Keele University. Students will also undertake a research project comparing the US and UK systems of medical care and differences in their response to a specific bio-ethical issue. This research could serve as the basis for a thesis. While in England, students will serve as a teaching assistant in a class on Medical Ethics at Keele University. Mentorship for Yale Medical Students in England would be provided by the Medical Ethics course director, Dr. Roger Worthington.
