Xiangya - Xiangya Hospital
The Yale-China Association, through partnership with the Xiangya School of Medicine, which Yale-China helped to establish in 1914, can match Yale medical students at one of the three affiliated hospitals of the Xiangya hospital system. The three hospitals are located throughout the city of Changsha, which is a medium sized city of about 6.5 million people. These hospitals serve a diverse patient population, both urban and rural. Students will be able to gain some firsthand experiences regarding the difficulties of providing health care for this population and the environmental challenges of rapid industrialization in China. There are nearly 10,000 beds among the three hospitals at Xiangya.
In the past, students have been placed in various departments at Xiangya’s hospitals, including but not limited to Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, General Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Radiology, Cardiology, Nephrology, ENT, Emergency Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, etc. Selection will in part depend on finding a mentor who will be able to work with the student in that department. Knowledge of mandarin would be useful in gaining a fuller understanding of the system of care in China, but is not a prerequisite for this program. The Xiangya clinical elective is for 4 weeks, but students are free to stay longer in China to do traveling on their own, if their schedule permits.
