Welcome to New Haven

New Haven has been home to Yale University for nearly three centuries. Conveniently located between New York and Boston, it is an international community that is a center for scholarship, business and the arts. Yale President Richard C. Levin, who has lived here for 30 years, says of New Haven, “It’s large enough to be interesting, yet small enough to be friendly.”

More than 3,500 international students and scholars representing over 100 countries study and work at Yale University each year and call New Haven home while they are here. Yale and New Haven offer a wide assortment of support resources, opportunities and activities to help them and their families quickly connect with this culturally rich and socially stimulating community.

Cultural opportunities

  1. World-class museums,  theaters, galleries, libraries and music
  2. More than 120 restaurants featuring cuisine from around the world
  3. A full calendar of community-wide events, many of which are free
  4. An assortment of unusual shops and boutiques concentrated in the city’s three main shopping districts: Chapel Street, Broadway and Audubon Street.

New Haven is a comfortable place to call home, whether you live on or off-campus. From quiet residential blocks to lively downtown streets, there are housing options to suit all tastes.
Accessible by plane, train and automobile, New Haven is easy to get to and even easier to navigate once you are here. Bicycle, foot and buses are popular modes of transportation, but Yale also provides free shuttle bus service to and from many city neighborhoods.
