Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences

Maternal Fetal Medicine

The Maternal Fetal Medicine Division of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences offers a four-week high-risk obstetrics elective for fourth-year medical students. Students will function as sub-interns and team members in the care of high-risk obstetrical patients at Yale-New Haven Hospital. In addition to inpatient duties, students will attend the weekly outpatient clinic. Students will also participate in prenatal ultrasound sessions and labor and delivery activities. Students are expected to take overnight call each Wednesday and two Saturdays of the rotation. Numerous didactic conferences are held during the rotation. It is recommended that students use the text, William's Obstetrics (Cunningham) to prepare for this experience and for research during the rotation. Student evaluations are based on clinical performance, participation at rounds and presentation of one evidence-based case review to members of the MFM Division. PREREQUISITE: Core Ob/Gyn Clerkship

Gynecology/Oncology

The purpose of the oncology elective is to enhance the student's knowledge of the diagnosis and management of women with gynecologic malignancies. The student is exposed to all modalities of treatment for gynecologic malignancies including radical gynecological surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. The student is expected to be an integral part of the team in the management of the patients admitted to the service. The student admits patients and takes part in their care throughout the elective period. The student is assigned to the operating room, especially to assist the patient whom he or she has evaluated. In addition to operating room exposure, extensive experience is gained in the post-operative management of these patients. The student attends one-day surgical procedures to observe the placement of brachytherapy and other procedures, e.g., cystoscopy, proctoscopy examination under anesthesia with biopsy. In the ambulatory setting, the student is exposed to the gestational trophoblastic disease clinic and the colposcopy clinic. On a weekly basis, students will attend divisional teaching sessions as well as the multi-discipline tumor conference. There is no night call on this elective. The recommended text for this elective is Clinical Gynecologic Oncology (DiSaia). PREREQUISITE: Core Ob/Gyn Clerkship

Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility

The Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) division offers a four-week elective for medical students who have completed their Ob/Gyn clerkship. In addition to expanding their knowledge of human reproductive endocrine function, students are introduced to disruptions in physiology and anatomy that can lead to endocrinologic and infertility disorders. Common problems seen in REI practice include female and male infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, polycystic ovarian syndrome, anovulation, amenorrhea, endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, abnormal uterine bleeding, uterine leiomyomas, and menopause and osteoporosis. In addition to clinical activities in the office, the operating room, and the hospital, students will have the opportunity to attend division conferences. Exposure to Advanced Reproductive Technologies (ART) includes observation of in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures, and andrology and embryology laboratory procedures. Evaluation will be based on overall clinical performance and an evidence-based presentation on an REI topic of interest. PREREQUISITE: Core Ob/Gyn Clerkship

Outpatient / Ambulatory Elective

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences is pleased to offer an outpatient elective experience. This elective is geared to students who seek a broader exposure to ambulatory care in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. The elective aims to provide a broad exposure to outpatient gynecologic issues, such as contraception, menstrual abnormalities, pelvic pain, vaginitis and sexually transmitted disease, infertility, disorders of urinary continence, screening for gynecologic malignancies, and management of menopausal symptoms that are commonly encountered in the ambulatory setting. The student will also have the opportunity to participate in the prenatal care of pregnant women, in order to gain a deeper understanding of the changes in maternal physiology throughout gestation, prenatal diagnosis, genetic counseling, and the outpatient management of the pregnant woman and her fetus. The student's time will be distributed, schedule permitting, among Yale-New Haven Hospital Women's Center, the Yale Urogynecology practice, the Yale Gynecologic Oncology Colposcopy Clinic, the Yale Maternal-Fetal Medicine practice, the Yale Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility practice and the private community office setting. PREREQUISITE: Core Ob/Gyn Clerkship
