Chair's Welcome

On behalf of all my colleagues, welcome to the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at Yale School of Medicine. Our commitment to excellence in patient care, education, and research is unparalleled.

Our faculty spans all subspecialties in Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Surgery. We strive to provide the most compassionate patient centered care while including the newest diagnostic and therapeutic techniques available. As an academic practice we are able to incorporate translational research in our care to patients when appropriate. We are pleased to have received a gold award in patient satisfaction.

Our active research program has ongoing collaborations among physicians and scientists in areas of basic and clinical science. Some of our discoveries have impacted clinical care. Discoveries have included: the identification of complement factor H gene (the major gene associated with macular degeneration), breakthroughs in the understanding of pathways involved in vision and the development of treatments for glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Our educational mission is focused on training the next generation of leaders in ophthalmology and visual science. We are proud of our former Yale students, residents, and fellows who have gone on to become leaders and innovators in healthcare as well as contributed to the progress of medical science.
