Staying for a Fifth Year
Fifth Year – Extended Study
A student may choose to take an additional year of medical school to do a Full Year of Research, a Joint Degree or a Flexible Fifth Year, provided that a significant portion of the year is related to medical education or another degree.
While a 5th year is permitted at Yale, a 6th year is not without prior approval of the Progress Committee.
A student on extended study (“5th year student”) is considered a full-time, enrolled student and therefore, has the same privileges as any other enrolled medical student; including continuation of health insurance, loan deferrals, ID access within the medical school, medical malpractice and disability insurance coverage.
Tuition Payment Options for Fifth Year Students:
1. Pay full tuition for four consecutive years and a registration fee for the chronological fifth year. Health insurance will be billed at the student rate by Yale Health whether paying full tuition for the year or the registration fee for the year.
2. Pay split tuition and the registration fee over a two-year period. Students will pay one-half of the current rate of tuition and one-half of the registration fee each year. The total amount will be charged in two installments, for each semester. Health insurance will be billed at the student rate by Yale Health for both years that split tuition is being paid.
3. Joint Degree Program at Yale (excluding MD/MHS students)
Students enrolled in a Joint Degree program at another Yale professional school will pay the required tuition of the other degree program to that school, as well as the registration fee at the medical school. Students will pay full tuition to the medical school in the next academic year. Health Insurance will be paid through the other Yale joint degree school during the 5th year. Students will apply for financial aid at the other school.
4. Dual Degree Program at an Away Institution
Students enrolled in a Dual Degree Program at an away institution will pay the required tuition of the other degree program to the away school and pay the registration fee to the medical school. Students will pay full tuition to the medical school in the next academic year. Health Insurance will be paid through the away institution during the 5th year. Students will apply for financial aid at the away institution.
Extended Study Forms
In order to be approved for a 5th year, each student must fill out both of the following on-line forms:firstname.lastname@example.org, in the Office of Student Affairs. Mary Kennedy will submit all change of status forms to the associate dean for student affairs for approval and the tuition specification forms will be submitted to the registrar for billing. Deadlines to apply for extended study are in May (detailed information will be sent by the registrar). Any forms received after this deadline, will be billed full tuition for the current academic year and billed the registration fee for the next academic year. The option to split the tuition will no longer be available to those students whose forms are received after the deadline.
