Third-Year Activities
Power Day
Issues of abuse of power as experienced by students at all levels are discussed during Power Day, which is held before third-year students begin their clinical rotations and again near the end of the third year. These discussions are held throughout the clinical year in the departments of internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology and surgery.
Fourth-Year Planning Meeting
The Office of Student Affairs holds a meeting in February of the third year to discuss the fourth year.
The meeting is focused on:
- National Residency Matching Program
- Residency applications
- The Medical Student Performance Evaluation, also known as the Dean’s Letter
- Issues related to scheduling subinternships and electives
- The thesis requirement (Note: Students are required to submit a thesis plan to the Office of Student Research prior to fall registration of their final year. They must provide the name of their thesis advisor and a tentative thesis title.)
USMLE Step I
Students are required to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step I by the end of December of their third year, but we encourage them to take it before starting clinical clerkships in June of the third year.
