Fourth-Year Calendar

Guide to Residency Planning for Students Participating in the Main Match (using ERAS and NRMP)

June and July

  • Attend Residency meeting in June. You will receive a Residency information packet at the June meeting and a personalized ERAS token (via email) on July 1st.
  • A CV is not needed for ERAS but a final copy of your CV is requested for your file at the time of your Dean’s letter meeting.
  • Begin working on your personal statement which is part of the application process. The personal statement is the most challenging part of the application and the most time consuming. Dr. Angoff is happy to review and critique your personal statement.

July 1

  • ERAS REGISTRATION OPENS ATwww.aamc.org/eras
  • You will register with ERAS using the token you receive via email. When you have registered with ERAS (MyERAS - applicant work area for creating applications) you can begin working on your application. You should begin working on your application in July.

August 15

  • NRMP REGISTRATION OPENS ATwww.nrmp.org
  • Registering for the NRMP is completely separate from ERAS and you must complete both. The deadline for registering for the NRMP is November 30th.

July and August

  • This is the time to finish your personal statement and CV.
  • IDENTIFY AND RESEACH PROGRAMS: You should be in the process of identifying the programs you are interested in applying to and researching them. This can be done on the web. Each program has their own website. You can also access information about programs through the FREIDA website.
  • LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: You should be requesting letters of recommendation from faculty members that you have worked with. The doctors that write a letter for you will need your CV and personal statement along with an ERAS coversheet, which is signed by you. In addition, if the faculty member was your attending, include a copy of the evaluation he or she wrote for you. You should get pre-addressed envelopes from Shana Bowlin in the Office of Student Affairs so LORs can be mailed directly to her. You can check with her periodically to find out if letters have been received in the Office of Student Affairs.

September

  • Programs begin receiving applications through ERAS beginning September 1st.
  • Practice interview sessions.

October 14

  • ERAS APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE COMPLETE (STUDENT AFFAIRS DEADLINE)
  • You should be following up with your letter writers to make sure that they have completed your letter and have sent it to the Office of Student Affairs to be scanned into ERAS. (Check application deadlines for your programs.)
  • By October 31, 2009, each student must have taken or scheduled a date for Step II Clinical Knowledge (CK) and Clinical Skills (CS) on or before December 31st OR your Dean’s Letter will NOT go out on November 1st.

November 1

  • Your Dean’s Letter will be sent to all the programs you have applied to via ERAS. Your Dean’s Letter will not be sent out if you have NOT taken or have NOT scheduled to take the Step II Clinical Knowledge and the Clinical Skills Exams by December, 31st. If you schedule these exams but later cancel or postpone them, your residency programs will be notified that you are in jeopardy of not graduating on time, and you may be prevented from entering a MATCH list.
  • Some specialties will begin inviting students for interviews. Other specialties may wait until mid to end of November to send invitations.

Mid to late November, December and January

  • You will be interviewing – the months you will interview will depend on the specialty you are applying in. Do not schedule clerkships or electives so that you are free to interview.

December 31

  • ** Deadline to take USMLE Step II (CK and CS)** Passing both components of Step II is a graduation requirement.
