Guide to Residency Planning for Students Participating in the Early Match (Using San Francisco Match for Ophthalmology and Pediatric Neurology)
May and June
- SAN FRANCISCO MATCH BEGINS ACCEPTING REQUESTS FOR REGISTRATION ATwww.sfmatch.org
- The San Francisco Match has no deadlines but has a target date (see handouts and website).
- Begin contacting programs for information and applications – CHECK WITH EACH PROGRAM FOR THEIR DEADLINES AND TO SEE IF EACH PROGRAM INCLUDES PLACEMENT FOR INTERNSHIP YEAR.
- Central Application Service instructions and materials are available on the San Francisco Match website (See above and in the early match residency folders). Begin to gather the necessary materials and prepare this package. Everything must be in to Student Affairs by August 17, 2009.
June and July
- Attend Residency meeting in June. You will receive Residency information packets at the June meeting and a personalized ERAS token (via email) on July 1st. You will use this token to register for ERAS if you’re applying for a preliminary internship program.
- Work on finishing your CV and have a final copy available at the time of your Dean’s letter meeting.
- Begin working on your personal statement which is part of the application process. The personal statement is the most challenging part of the application and the most time consuming. Dr. Angoff is happy to review and critique your personal statement.
July and August
- This is the time to finish your personal statement and CV.
- IDENTIFY AND RESEARCH PROGRAMS FOR PRELIMINARY YEAR: You should be in the process of identifying the programs you are interested in applying to and researching them for your preliminary year. This can be done on the web. Each program has its own website. You can also access information about programs through the FREIDA website.
- LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: You should be requesting letters of recommendation from faculty members that you have worked with. The doctors that write a letter for you will need your CV and personal statement along with an ERAS coversheet, which is signed by you. In addition, if the faculty member was your attending, include a copy of the evaluation he or she wrote for you. You should get pre-addressed envelopes from Shana Bowlin in the Office of Student Affairs so LORs can be mailed directly to her. You can check with her periodically to find out if letters have been received in the Office of Student Affairs.
August 15
- NRMP REGISTRATION OPENS ATwww.nrmp.org
- Registering for the NRMP is completely separate from ERAS (for prelim) and you must complete both. The deadline for registering for the NRMP is November 30th.
September
- Programs begin receiving applications through ERAS beginning September 1st.
- Practice interview sessions.
October 14
- ERAS APPLICATIONS FOR PRELIM YEAR SHOULD BE COMPLETE (STUDENT AFFAIRS DEADLINE)
- You should be following up with your letter writers to make sure that they have completed your letter and have sent it to the Office of Student Affairs to be scanned into ERAS. (Check application deadlines for your programs.)
- By October 31, 2009, each student must have taken or scheduled a date for Step II Clinical Knowledge (CK) and Clinical Skills (CS) on or before December 31st OR your Dean’s Letter will NOT go out on November 1st.
November 1
- Your Dean’s Letter will be sent to all the programs you have applied to via ERAS for your preliminary year and to the San Francisco Matching Program for your postgraduate year two. Your Dean’s Letter will not be sent out if you have not taken or are not scheduled to take the Step II Clinical Knowledge and the Clinical Skills Exams by December, 31st. If you schedule these exams but later cancel or postpone them, your residency programs will be notified that you are in jeopardy of not graduating on time, and you may be prevented from entering a MATCH list.
- Programs will begin inviting students for interviews. Plan preliminary year interviews for the same trip.
December 31
