First-Year Curriculum

First year classes explore the science of normal human biology. The Pre-Clinical Clerkship introduces students to the principles and skills of medical interviewing and physical examination. Students see patients and meet in small groups with a clinical tutor.

Teaching begins on the first day of class with a discussion on the importance of understanding the culture in which both patient and physician approach the practice of medicine. Throughout the year, students may attend talks on the history of medicine, which puts the study and practice of contemporary medicine into historical context.

Evaluation

While students don’t receive grades in their basic science courses, they must complete and demonstrate proficiency in all required courses before going on to the next year. The vehicle by which students demonstrate proficiency is determined by the course director.

There are two types of examinations: qualifying exams, which are required, and assessment examinations, which students take to satisfy themselves that they know the material. Most courses in the first two years include a final qualifying examination, which students must pass before progressing to the next year.
