First-Year Activities
Students during their first year and second year have time to pursue extracurricular activities, including service, politics, research, and career-related student interest groups. Some of these organizations are listed on medstation.
- Student Orientation
New students attend an orientation session before classes start, beginning in last August. These events are jointly planned by the Office of Student Affairs, Education, and the medical student class officers. - Matriculation
- The White Coat Ceremony
The White Coat Ceremony recognizes the significance of first-year medical students receiving their white jackets, which are worn during all clinical studies. The White Coat Ceremony symbolizes the role of students as care-givers, and it signals the start of medical school. This festive occasion happens on the afternoon of matriculation day, and family members are encouraged to attend. Details are explained in the post-admissions process and during orientation. - First Day of Classes

Department-sponsored informal get-togethers with students to help them start thinking about career specialties. - Meetings With the Associate Dean
Starting in January, the Associate Dean will set up get-acquainted meetings with first-year students, but anyone wishing to make an appointment before then, is encouraged to contact the Associate Dean. - Dinners at the Dean's House
The Dean of the Medical School invites all first-year students to his home for a get-acquainted dinner.
