- Critical Care Elective
This is an opportunity for senior students to participate in critical care medicine activities in the medical intensive care unit (MICU). The emphasis will be on evaluation and acute management of respiratory failure, shock and sepsis and use of invasive monitoring. The physiological basis of disease and rationale for therapeutic interventions will also be emphasized.

Learning Objectives:
- History skills. Gather the important information that is needed for the care of the critically ill patient and complete a history in the medical record for at least 5 patients.
- Physical examination skills. Complete a pertinent physical examination for the evaluation of the critically ill patient on at least 5 patients. The student should demonstrate the ability to perform this pertinent physical examination while being observed by at least one attending or resident.
- Knowledge/diagnostic and treatment skills: Know about common critical care conditions.
- Procedural skills. Perform bedside procedures as available (ABG, nasogastric tube…).
- Attitude: Demonstrate professional responsibility in working as a team member with other members of the critical care care team, patients and families. 6. Career/context: Know the training/career pathway for critical care medicine.
- Gastroenterology Elective
This is an opportunity for senior students to work up and follow patients with a variety of gastrointestinal problems on the consultative service. They will follow patients requiring procedures in the GI laboratory, intensive care units, inpatient service and outpatient clinic. Their team will include a Yale GI fellow and attending.

- Knowledge/diagnostic and treatment skills: Know about common gastrointestinal conditions.
- Procedural skills. Perform paracentesis on at least one patient if available.
- Attitude: Demonstrate professional responsibility in working as a team member with other members of the gastroenterology consult team, patients and families.

- General Surgery Elective
Students participating in a General Surgery elective rotation become an integral part of the residency program as a student member of the resident team and are supervised by the Chief Resident and Attendings on the service. During this rotation, students are fully integrated into the service and are expected to participate in all teaching conferences, Grand Rounds, clinics and attend core curriculum conference two hours per week. Under the supervision of the Chief Resident and faculty, students participate in the management of general surgical in-patients, preoperative evaluations, and outpatient clinics. Our goal is to provide an educational experience that will be of value to the student's eventual practice, regardless of which specialty he or she enters.

Learning Objectives:
- History skills: Conduct patient history and determine differential diagnosis, laboratory procedures, and diagnostic studies for basic surgical problems.
- Physical examination skills: Complete a physical examination to determine differential diagnosis, laboratory procedures, and diagnostic studies for basic surgical problems.
- Knowledge/diagnostic and treatment skills: cognitive ability – the student should have a good fund of knowledge, be able to apply their knowledge base to tasks during rotation and demonstrate knowledge of basic trauma management, basic laparoscopy, acute abdomen, surgical emergencies, basic anatomy and physiology as it pertains to general surgery and trauma, and bariatric surgery.
- Procedural skills: The student will demonstrate manual dexterity and develop and execute patient care plans appropriate for the student’s level; perform minor surgical procedures, evaluate patients, assist with preoperative tasks, demonstrate basic principles of care for a trauma victim, identify early post-operative complications, apply basic wound care principles, demonstrate written communication, and assist with operative procedures as needed.

- Geriatric Medicine Elective
This is an opportunity to diagnose and manage geriatric syndromes in a variety of settings. Sites include inpatient consultation service, outpatient geriatric assessment clinic, and nursing homes. Students will have the opportunity to work up and follow patients and participate in weekly team conferences.

- Subinternship in Internal Medicine
Opportunity for senior students to manage acute medical problems such as chest pain, shortness of breath, acute renal failure, hyperkalemia, diabetic ketoacidosis and GI bleeding in a unit. Students will be the primary providers under the supervision of a resident and clinician educator. Responsibilities include writing orders, doing procedures, arranging consults and family meetings and hospital follow up of patients with the same clinician educator. Students will develop and receive feedback on clinical skills. No overnight call.

- Internal Medicine Elective for MD/PhD Students
The goal of this elective is to reinforce students’ clinical skills following their time away from clinical medicine. The emphasis will be made on history, physical examination skills, interpretation of data, morning presentations, medical terminology, patient communication and coordination of care. Students will be assigned to a team that consists of two interns, one resident, and one attending. He or she will admit his or her own patients and be responsible, with supervision, for the care of their patients during hospitalization. The student will present daily on rounds and history, physical diagnosis and laboratory interpretation skills will be emphasized..The student will attend daily noon conference and weekly Medical Grand Rounds to enhance their fund of knowledge of clinical medicine.
