Anesthesiology

This is a full-time clinical elective.  Advanced Clinical Elective is an individualized program of instruction in anesthesia subspecialties, including cardiovascular, neurosurgical, obstetrical and pediatric anesthesia.

Length of Rotation: 4 weeks (maximum-2 students)

Learning Objectives

  1. History skills. Gather the important information that is needed for the preoperative anesthesia evaluation and complete a history in the medical record for at least of 5 patients scheduled for anesthesia.
  2. Physical examination skills. Complete a pertinent physical examination for the evaluation of airway and cardio-respiratory system on at least 5 patients. The student should demonstrate the ability to perform this pertinent physical examination while being observed by at least one attending or resident.
  3. Knowledge/diagnostic and treatment skills: Know about common pediatric critical care conditions 
  4. Procedural skills. Perform direct laryngoscopy on at least 15 patients. The student should know the key indications for the procedure.
  5. Attitude:; Demonstrate professional responsibility in working as a team member with other members of the anesthesia care team, patients and families.
  6. Career/context: Know the training/career pathway for anesthesiology

Students interested in laboratory research projects focused in the neurophysiology and neuropharmacology, of the sensations of pain and itch, and in vascular biology are encouraged to speak with Anesthesia faculty.  Visiting students must appreciate that a one-month elective will enable him/her to be exposed to ongoing research, but that a longer period is necessary for meaningful participation.

Students are welcome to inquire about participating in ongoing research by the department faculty involving clinical responses to drugs affecting cardiopulmonary, central nervous and autonomic nervous system, noninvasive cardiovascular monitoring, perioperative coagulation and other topics. Visiting student must appreciate that a one-month elective will enable him/her to be exposed to ongoing research, but that a longer period is necessary for meaningful participation.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understanding of the normal anatomic and physiologic changes that occur … (as related to relevant clinical care and focus of research).
  2. An understanding of basic epidemiologic principles and the use of statistics in describing illness within defined populations.
  3. An understanding of the major challenges, both present and future, to the health of communities and nations … (based on relation to current research).
  4. Awareness of the necessity for scientific method, and knowledge of its application, for the discovery of new medical knowledge.
  5. The ability to obtain an accurate medical history that covers relevant and essential aspects of the history.
  6. The ability to communicate effectively, with patients, patients' families, colleagues, and others with whom physicians (and investigators) must exchange information in carrying out their responsibilities.
