Typical Day

Conferences

The day starts with a morning conference from 7:30-8:30am. There is also an afternoon conference from 1-2 pm. Conferences are predominantly didactic or case-based around a particular subject during the beginning of the year in order to introduce new residents to important radiologic concepts. Later in the year, conferences include more case-based sessions to simulate real practice interactions with clinicians and to prepare residents for the American Board of Radiology exams. Board reviews for senior residents are also administered for several months before the oral Board exam.

Grand Rounds

Occur monthly at 12:30pm on Thursdays from September through May. Most of the speakers are world renown radiologists from around the country, who also give resident conferences and board reviews during their visit with us.

Workday

The residents' workday begins with the 7:30am conference. The residents report for clinical duty at 8:30 am. They attend afternoon conference at 1 pm, and resume clinical duties at 2 pm. Residents rotate through emergency radiology, nuclear medicine, pediatric radiology, GI/GU radiology, ultrasound, interventional radiology, thoracic radiology, mammography, musculoskeletal imaging, neuroradiology, neuro-interventional, body CT, cardiac imaging, and body MRI, the West Haven V.A. Medical Center as well as the Yale-St.Raphael Campus. Senior rotations in obstetric ultrasound, US scanning, Breast procedures, and cardiac nuclear medicine are also provided.

Call Responsibilities

Yale is one of the few academic programs where the Emergency Department is covered by both a resident and an attending radiologist 24 x 7. This allows the resident to have the experience of making decisions in a high volume environment with complex pathology, yet receiving immediate feedback by an attending radiologist. The combination of 24 hour attending radiologist coverage with resident coverage with resident coverage minimizes the likelihood of a patient being discharged with serious pathology or sent to the OR with an incorrect or non-surgical finding.

While on night float, residents are free from daytime responsibilities. Residents have three to four two-week blocks of night float during the second year of residency. First year radiology residents take daytime weekend or evening emergency radiology call weekly, and third year radiology residents do so approximately every 2 weeks. Evening call begins at 5:00 pm and ends at 9:30 pm, and weekend day call begins at 8:00 am and ends at 9:30 pm. Senior radiology residents take periodic in-house cross sectional imaging call in the early evenings and weekend mornings.
