Evaluation and Consultation Service
The Tic Disorder/Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Specialty Clinic offers outpatient evaluations for children and adolescents with OCD and children, adolescents, and adults with tic disorders, including Tourette syndrome.
Prior to scheduling an appointment, we send an intake packet to the family, which includes a detailed questionnaire about the patient's tic symptoms as well as any obsessive-compulsive symptoms (which often, but not always, accompany tic disorders). We review that information as well as any additional reports of previous evaluations, school information, etc. that will help us decide on the most appropriate treatments to recommend.
The clinic visit itself is approximately two hours with at least one of the Specialty Clinic's attending faculty members and child psychiatry and psychology fellows. A detailed written report of the consultation is prepared for the family following the visit. Recommendations are made to the family and the primary provider for on-going treatment or follow-up depending upon the particular needs of the patient and family.
Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Service
Over the past several years, a growing body of research has shown that cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can be highly effective in the treatment of OCD, anxiety, tics, and trichotillomania. The TS/OCD Clinic offers these services to children and adolescents. An initial evaluation is conducted to gain an understanding of the child’s individual presentation and needs in order to determine if CBT is an appropriate treatment approach. If so, treatment is generally provided on a weekly basis over a period of three to six months. For OCD and anxiety, the treatment is centered on exposure and, for OCD, ritual prevention. For tics and trichotillomania, a slightly different approach, habit reversal training, is used.
