While it is well-established that the bulk of protein traffic from the ER occurs via the Golgi stack in variations of the classical secretory pathway, there have nonetheless been persistent indications that cells may harbor an alternative pathway taken by some proteins that by-passes the Golgi altogether.

I am currently developing a mammalian cell model to characterize the intracellular mechanisms (especially the requirement of SNARE and coatomer) involved in this alternative pathway.
