Lyndsay Harris to Leave Yale It is with mixed emotions that we announce that Lyndsay Harris, Associate Professor of Medical Oncology, will leave Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital on December 1. Lyndsay has done a tremendous job here in the area of breast cancer treatment and research, and has been integrally involved in the cancer center as a core director and a member of our executive committee. She has been a wonderful, productive collaborator within the section of medical oncology and to many members of the cancer center. We wish Lyndsay well with her new endeavors and we will work with her over the coming months to facilitate a smooth transition of her patients, projects, and staff. Personal Research Assistance is Available to you! The Cancer Center has two medical librarians devoted to serving the needs of the Center's faculty and staff. The Cancer Center Librarians, Denise Hersey and Mark Gentry, are available to meet with Cancer Center staff outside of the library, in staff/faculty offices, or at any of the medical campus buildings. Denise and Mark can show you how to use many of the library's online resources including citation management systems such as EndNote or RefWorks; PDF Management systems; Mobile Device resources and the library's many online books and journals. Development Update Joanne Weidhaas, MD, PhD, received a $50k research gift from an individual donor for her work involving microRNAs and their possible role in the early detection and treatment of ovarian cancer. The gift came from a 1980 Yale College graduate who lost an aunt to ovarian cancer.
The Yale Cancer Center Development Office received the inquiry and facilitated the process, which began with a review of multiple proposals and ended with the donor and Dr. Weidhaas meeting in New York City to finalize the gift.
The grant will enable Dr. Weidhaas to collect and analyze blood samples in the hopes of discovering microRNA fingerprints that can predict ovarian cancer and the subsequent patient specific treatment. |

Employee Profile: Lisa Filarsky The Employee Profile recognizes the diverse contributions made by Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital staff have to meet our patient care, research, education, and outreach goals. The staff profiled are examples of the great work being done here, and the dedication and values we possess. To suggest someone to be profiled, please contact Emily Fenton.

As Clinical Receptionist in the Multi-Specialty Clinic at Smilow Cancer Hospital, Lisa Filarsky's job encompasses many different facets of patient interaction. Among other things, she is responsible for greeting patients, collecting insurance information, and pulling patient charts for physicians.
In her role she interacts with patients on a daily basis and makes sure they are as comfortable as possible during their visit.
"I try to do whatever I can to make a patient's visit less stressful for them. If they enter into a friendly environment it can help to make their experience that much easier," Lisa explained.
Lisa sees patients that come in once, sometimes twice a week to meet with their care team.
She commented that over time they become a part of the Smilow family.
Lisa's area covers thoracic oncology, endocrinology, ENT, and urology. She also works on the 7th floor of Smilow checking in Infusion Center patients when extra help is needed. Michelle Wilson, Lisa's manager commented, "Lisa is a valued member of the Yale Cancer Center clinical operations team. She greets patients upon their arrival to clinic and does so with a smile every time.
She sets a welcoming and positive tone for the patient's entire visit with us, which is extremely important. The energy it takes to maintain this level of service when greeting approximately 200 patients per day is certainly impressive!"

Grateful Patients Make Generous Donors
One of our strategic goals at Yale Cancer Center is to equip our physicians and scientists with tools and resources to raise funds for their programs. One important way to do this is for faculty to engage with grateful patients and their families.
We invite you to join us for "Insight Into Medical Philanthropy," on Friday, October 21st. This workshop provides an understanding of medical philanthropy, donor motivation, grateful patient concepts, and the donor development process.
The workshop also directly addresses the appropriate role of medical professionals in donor engagement. A light breakfast will be served at 6:30 AM, and the session will begin promptly at 7 AM in the Beaumont Room, concluding at 9:30 AM. For those of you who have clinic on Fridays, we ask if possible that you not schedule patients that day until 10 AM. The workshop will be led by Walt Edwards, Executive VP of Advancement Resources.
Advancement Resources has helped academic medical institutions throughout the nation build donor-focused programs. The workshop will provide practical advice and instruction for faculty and also offers an opportunity for productive exchanges with colleagues and with our staff in the Development Office on concerns such as HIPAA compliance, other privacy issues, and ethics. We're confident this workshop will strengthen your ability to identify and seize philanthropic opportunities and to position your program and Yale Cancer Center for fundraising success in the future. Because space is limited, please confirm your participation by contacting YCC Director of Development Peter Lamothe at (203) 436-8554 as soon as possible. Peter is also available to answer questions about the workshop. We hope you will make the time to participate on October 21st.
