Residents are assessed by faculty, fellow residents and nurses. They are evaluated in the spectrum of the six ACGME core competencies: medical knowledge, patient care, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills, systems-based practice and practice-based learning. The program director and associate program director review these evaluations monthly. Strengths and weaknesses are identified and discussed with each resident to assure a successful completion of the program.
Residents receive regular feedback from their advisors, rotation coordinators and the program director and associate program director. Formal reviews of progress and individualized learning plans occur semiannually with the program director or associate program director. Residents are also given the Anesthesia Knowledge Test at the end of the first month, at the end of six months, and at the end of 24 months of training. This allows them to measure their didactic progress and refine their reading. Mock oral examinations in the format of the American Board of Anesthesiology oral exam are administered to all CA-1 and CA-2 residents annually. CA-3 residents and faculty, including our seven current and former ABA examiners, give the exam.
Residents take the annual American Board of Anesthesiology / American Society of Anesthesiologists In-Training Exam in February. The keywords from the exam help residents focus their studying. CA-1 and CA-2 residents take monthly online exams on assigned topics. Subspecialty exams are given after most rotations.
Each resident is also required to complete the twice-yearly American Society of Anesthesiologists Self-Evaluation Exam, as well as the Annual American Board of Anesthesiology In-Training Examination.
The Clinical Competence Committee meets every semester to review all resident data and recommend whether credit towards American Board of Anesthesiology certification be granted.
