Patient Care

The primary venue for the department's clinical activities is Yale-New Haven Hospital. We deliver care in more than 65 clinical locations, including inpatient and ambulatory operating rooms, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and The Smilow Cancer Center, labor and birth, the Surgical Intensive Care and Cardiothoracic Intensive Care units, YNHH’s preadmission testing center (with adult and pediatrics), the preoperative pain service and in numerous procedural areas including:  interventional radiology, diagnostic imaging, radiation oncology and GI suite. 

We administer more than 42,000 anesthetics a year and care for pediatric patients at the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and older patients at the West Haven Veterans Administration Hospital.  In addition, the department also provides anesthetic care at the Temple Surgical Center.

Education & Training

Our residency training program, comprised of 57 residents, has recently been enhanced by the development of the Yale Resident Research Scholar Program, which gives chosen residents a chance to start a research career during their traditional residency training. In addition, we offer fellowships in cardiac anesthesia, neuro-anesthesia, obstetrical anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, critical care, ambulatory anesthesia and regional anesthesia.

Anesthesia Research

Our research program encompasses clinical, translational and basic areas of investigation in an environment that supports collaboration both intra- and interdepartmentally. The focus is on cellular and molecular biology, tissue engineering and clinical research on a range of topics.
