Every year we are asked many questions about how to participate in Global Health opportunities. In order to address some of your preliminary questions we have pulled together the most basic information from previous years in order to help direct your focus. - How do I find out about various international volunteer opportunities?
You’ve come to the right place. All of the international volunteer programs which are on this site have been verified as oppurtunities that are available to residents and fellows participating in Anesthesiology training programs.collapse
- How can I arrange to participate on a medical mission?
Resident/fellow participation in a medical mission requires a lot of planning, both on your end as well as the administration. We ask that you clearly communicate your plans with the chiefs as well as Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Hererra to streamline this process.collapse
- How far in advance do I need to plan in order to participate?
Advance planning is of utmost importance. Many mission trips fill a year in an advance secondary to high demand and allocation of resources. If you are interested in participating in an abroad experience, we definitely suggest that you start planning right away.collapse
- Is there a lot of cost involved?
The costs vary over a wide range. They include but are not limited to: vaccinations, airfare, room and board, as well as miscellaneous in-country costs. There are several programs that offer a stipend as part of acceptance into the program however, not all programs offer financial support.collapse
- What can I do to help offset these costs?
Unfortunately, there are very few scholarships or travel grants available for residents/fellows to help fund mission work. Through various networks and internet searching, however, we were able to find some scholarship opportunities that you can apply for. Please see the financial support section of this site.collapse
- Can I use my abroad experience as my academic project?
Time spent on a medical mission is a very enriching experience and we would love for you to channel that experience into an academic project. Please discuss your project ideas with Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Hererra for approval.collapse
