YSM officially adopted a coat of arms in the fall of 1963. The top half of the shield represents the arms of Yale University founder Elihu Yale: an ermine field, white with small, black stylized tails beneath a red cross similar to that of St. Andrew and St. Patrick. Pictured on the lower half is the rod of Asclepius – a serpent entwined around a staff – the ancient Greek symbol of medicine. It sits on a green field, which is the academic color for medicine. Together the two symbols represent
“Yale Medicine.”
